You are on S.O.U.L.MAG, the review of the night by S.O.U.L. Montréal. This is a text by Costa, “The Dancer”, about an experience lived on the dance floor. If you were there, or if you have something to tell us about it, share it with us in S.O.U.L.MEMORY, below.

Stereo’s 25 years: sixteen hours of trance
Stereo — 241102 — Danny Tenaglia
ANALYTICAL THESIS OF NEURO-COMPULSIVE OBSERVATION INDUCED BY THE RHYTHMIC SEQUENCE OF THE GOLDEN RATIO

Letter to my friend Paul, who would have loved to accompany us, but who was there with us, in our hearts.
Letter to my friend Paul, who would have loved to join us but was with us in spirit and in our hearts.
Dear Paul,You asked me to dance for you because of your love for Danny, and here’s how my personal experience unfolded. You already know how a simple story can overflow into a mystical experience, one that invades and transforms us. Through this sharing, I aim to extract words that, when gathered, become a collective consciousness and an eternal memory of a moment shared — beyond borders, beyond time.
This text was meant to be just a letter, but it has grown into something far larger than I intended. As I wrote, divine inspiration seemed to descend, guiding my words. I hope you’ll follow my process as I unveil strands of knowledge that, once revealed, can no longer be ignored by the human spirit.
GO DANNY, GO!
On November 2, 2024, the term “temple” truly took on new meaning as souls gathered in pursuit of a shared, transcendent moment.
For context, I arrived at Stereo after visiting Bunker Paradise with my wonderful fAMIlia friends. On the way, we picked up another friend, arriving at around 8:30 AM on Sunday, November 3.
We walked in to the sounds of “Music Is the Answer” (the Danny Tenaglia version, of course) — playing for what felt like 20 glorious minutes.
The energy was already palpable. It took me about 45 minutes to greet everyone because, as you know, part of the magic lies in the arrival ritual: acknowledging familiar faces, embracing friends, and exchanging knowing smiles.
THE MENTAL STATE
Before immersing yourself fully in the dance, there’s an essential phase of arrival and connection. Each greeting builds the foundation for the shared mental state that makes the experience profound. It’s only once this ritual is complete that you can truly surrender to the rhythm.
Dance isn’t just about movement; it’s about reaching a precise mental state — one that’s Zen, refreshing, and nourishing. In that state, nothing matters except the next beat, the snare, the clap, the click, and the clack.
It’s normal to need an hour or two to settle into the groove, weaving a dynamic energy that will eventually unite everyone in a collective, timeless moment.
THE MUSICAL JOURNEY
On Saturday, Nov. 2, 24, the music was extremely danceable, and Danny Tenaglia’s way of playing and mixing is absolutely unique and out of the ordinary. This guy knows and understands so much about EVERYTHING that creates musical space, and has such mastery of the tools that literally generate the sounds heard, as they happen to us dancers, that only a few insiders can grasp the technique behind it.
Very few DJs in the world can claim to achieve such a state of trust and instant response from dancers.
Let me explain: Of course, every DJ or artist, especially those of great renown, has an intrinsic ability to create unique moments and atmospheres that bring people together.
That’s why they are who they are.
Each DJ has his own musical color and atmospheric flavor that becomes his signature.
Each flavor has its own purpose, context, properties and preference in the heart of the dancer.
Techno DJs occupy a different place in the menu of choices from a progressive or Tech-House DJ, and that’s the point.
And without in any way denigrating anyone or even daring to compare on a quantitative scale, there are the just normal djs, then there are the good ones, there are the very good ones, the exceptional ones, and people like Tenaglia, Cattaneo or Schulz, without being limited to them, who have their own cosmic scale.
Let’s see why…
Sometimes you go to a DJ for his music.
Sometimes you go to a DJ for the atmosphere you know he can create at an event.
Exceptionally and very rarely, as is the case with Danny, we go for the all-encompassing, intimate and unique experience he’ll give you. We go for the immensity of the well-being it brings us, far beyond the music.
If we could “imagine” the comparison for the layman… It would be like going to a private dinner with a chef friend.
Just imagine…
Your chef friend can serve a room of 1,000 people with four courses and flavors from all over the world, but here, he’s cooking for YOU only, with a few friends, in private… Your friend has access to all his ingredients, without any limitations, and he improvises for you with only his best ingredients, all his little tricks of the trade, with no limits on time, cost or quantities… We go ahead and he makes you discover his world, because he wants to, and because he LOVES it!
Just imagine…
If it happened to you, you’d probably realize how lucky and privileged it is to be sitting there with a few friends, enjoying a meal you’d never imagined, and so much better when shared with friends in love…
In a way, that’s how I celebrate the joy of taking part in a good evening at Stereo: we let ourselves go in intimacy with a “chef” who’s eager to offer us his world, because he LOVES it. And we LOVE that he loves it 🙂
Tenaglia’s extraordinary Musical Buffet was unrivalled, unique and of the highest order, for the pieces tasted do not exist as heard, except for the basic sound structures.
The artist is so in control of all the tools, ingredients, recipes and little magic tricks that make time disappear in movement, that hours are swallowed in mouthfuls like seconds.
Clearly, following the unfortunate situation in the summer that prevented Tenaglia from coming to Montreal, he seemed to be starving for “his” Stereo, and above all, enjoying it to the full at every moment.
It’s not as if he needed to make amends for anything, but he gave and gave so generously that he definitely made up for everything that needed to be made up for by directing the most perfect grand ball imaginable. What’s more, he far exceeded all expectations of what was planned or anticipated.

Around lunchtime, the master of the house took a short break at the microphone, as is his wont, to greet his ((())) Dancers, communicate love to them, and this year, he presented 100 people with a Stereo logo and 25th anniversary sweater.
One hundred people had the joy of receiving a souvenir that will now live forever.
It’s a generous gesture, and that’s why when you love Dany, you love Dany.
This is where he confirms his status as a living legend of music first and foremost, and of Stereo Soul second.
THE WORKER
You had to see him all night long, working incessantly with enormous concentration on his machines, all the while keeping an eye on his room to get it exactly where he wanted it.
We saw an exceptional being share his passion with us, with an uncommon technical mastery of his working tools, a structural, rhythmic, harmonic and percussive understanding that can’t be bought, in addition to a historical musical depth of nearly 50 years’ experience, and all the qualifiers you can find to talk about a person who embodies music…
Very few humans can maintain such a flow of energy without ever losing their way for 16 hours, and the communion he was able to establish between himself and us dancers was a timeless experience. This absolute trust between the dancers and the DJ is a privilege and an absolutely unique bond, rare and precious in our memories, which generates a real emotion of gratitude for the joy of experiencing it.
I took many, many minutes just looking at Danny’s face. I’d never seen so much intensity and emotion in one person, in a DJ completely immersed in his music. And yet I’ve watched hundreds of them, over more than 25 years, because I really enjoy watching them as they work.
I took the time to read every word on his lips as they fell into the music, with his facial expressions, the movements of his whole body, the intensity in his eyes, the pain, love or joy manifesting itself every moment he shared the music with us, as if they were phrases he was announcing in a passionate speech.
I’ve seen DJs mime the lyrics before, but never before had I seen a person BE the lyrics to such an extent.
Never before had I seen how a human being – in fact, there is no other human being – how THIS human being was completely IN the expression of the best of each of his fibers to make us vibrate and resonate to the best of what he believed.
In general, a DJ is there to work, and that’s why he’s focused. It’s only natural.
But Danny speaks to his music and THROUGH his music with all the mimics of supplication, complicity, love and passion that one can express.
He was like a man courting his wife, begging her to forgive him, he was like a child asking his parent not to forget him, he was the woman declaring her love to her man, he was the man sharing his joy of a new child with the whole world, he was the one forgiving, the one asking, the one receiving, he was us, he was everything, all at once.
It was a moment of communion and a form of collective trance, shared between him and the hundreds of people present in the deepest silence and respect for the music, leaving nothing but an absolutely divine, magical state.
I repeat, we witnessed, shared and lived together a human experience that can only manifest itself in exceptional conditions that are almost impossible to achieve, but which have existed since time immemorial in the form of sacred rituals in the most ancient societies…
A TIMELESS EXPERIENCE
This wasn’t just a dance party; it was a sacred ritual. Few events reach such a profound level of shared energy, but this one did. It was a collective trance, a rare and precious moment that will linger in the hearts of everyone who was there.
At the heart of the night, Danny’s improvised sets felt like cycles — each lasting about 45 to 60 minutes and taking us deeper into ourselves or outward into other realms. The symbiotic blend of music and lighting transported us, breaking down the boundaries of time and space.
MYSTICAL OBSERVATION
Danny’s sequences reminded me of the golden ratio, a perfect balance of chaos and order. His music followed a spiral-like journey, drawing us into a shared rhythm and collective consciousness.
The link between music, movement, and spirit was undeniable. It was a reminder that, in moments like these, we’re not just dancing; we’re transcending.
To illustrate this, let’s imagine using the spiral matrix of the golden ratio (which some of you may be familiar with, if not see at the following link, and https://www.adobe.com/ca_fr/creativecloud/design/discover/golden-ratio.html and learn more about it)

In each thirty-minute window (illustrated by the rectangle and its curve)—or perhaps a little more, or a little less—he transports us into low-frequency, spectral rhythms or heavy basslines never fully developed, gently drawing us along into techno or tech-house sounds. These evolve with a rhythm that accelerates, emerging from percussion, a kick, or a snare, suddenly injecting explosive energy into the room for a track or two before plunging back into hypnosis and trance. And so it goes, for hours, and hours, and hours.
Experience ma-gis-trale.
TRANSCENDENCE-FLAVORS
In terms of effectiveness, I’d say that rarely has a dancer been privileged to savor such a feast of rhythm: beats, claps, snares, hi-hats, TishTack, PAAW, or BAM. The structure is impeccable, always carrying us—without faltering—into bursts of energy that surge from the depths of the gut and explode into the legs, heart, and head. There were so many smiles, my god…
One of DJ Tenaglia’s particular signatures is the way he takes time to build his structures, always hinting at the rhythm to come with textural elements. This leaves dancers in a state of intuitive anticipation, leading to the absolute delight of hitting the drop at just the right moment.
This process is deeply satisfying, fulfilling an intuitive need to resolve anticipation and close rhythmic cycles.
Wait… this gives me a flash!
As I write these lines, I realize there might be a connection between this musical structure and the reward circuit in the brain.
Could it be? Let’s explore this together.
Let’s get down to neuro – get ready for a few paragraphs of heavy juice…
So..:
THE NEURO CONNECTION
Our brains all share the same fundamental dopaminergic mechanisms. In fact, all motivational functioning is rooted in the reward circuit (see reward system).
To simplify: in any thought cycle—for instance, “I’m thirsty”—there’s a natural sequence. It begins with an impulse or anticipation (e.g., a metabolic signal for thirst). This creates hope or desire (“A glass of water would be amazing!”), which drives motivational mechanisms into action (you go to the sink to pour a glass of water). The cycle concludes with satisfaction and reward (“Ahhh, that’s refreshing!”), releasing dopamine in the nucleus accumbens, the core of the reward circuit.
This cycle is crucial: the closing of the loop satisfies the need and allows us to move on.

This was a micro-base in brief of the reward mechanism just to get us to agree on the hypothesis premise being presented to you :
So, follow me (no but admit it’s interesting!):Now, imagine how this mechanism applies to the dancefloor:
When preparing the body for a long sequence of dancing, the mind becomes deeply attuned to the present moment, following the rhythm that drives movement. Sonic cues—like structural elements signaling an upcoming drop—heighten intellectual enjoyment and emotional anticipation, creating tingles of joy and well-being. These moments forge a deep connection between body, mind, and soul, offering a counterintuitive escape from the disjointed rhythms of daily life.
It’s this profound communion that allows dancers to reconnect with themselves. Trust in the DJ and surrender to the environment create an intimacy that fills the heart with joy and gratitude.
LETTING GO OF THE EGO TO FIND THE INNER SELF
Though often unconscious of it, this state of surrender is precisely what enables reconnection with the self. It’s this state of intimacy—mind, body, and soul in harmony—that people seek, even if it’s elusive due to the precise conditions required to reach it.
As I danced, it struck me repeatedly: the people here weren’t just dancers. Far from it. These were individuals healing themselves through movement, nourishing their souls, and recognizing their connection to something greater.
Each person who chose to stay—who chose not to leave—embraced the timelessness of the moment. They surrendered entirely to the music, forgetting everything else, abandoning time and self to the rhythm. To fully grasp the cathartic power of such an experience, you have to live it. But if you have, you’ll recognize yourself in these words. This is your story.
BACK ON THE FLOOR
This next segment reflects on how sacred moments emerge, and why they do.
At around 7:30 p.m., I counted about 130 people on the dancefloor. By 9:00 p.m., there were still over 60. These hundreds of people had collectively decided that nothing else mattered enough to extract them from this extraordinary experience.
Each participant chose to surrender to the unknown, letting go of the need to know when it would end. They simply trusted the DJ, aware of the privilege of partaking in this deeply intimate and powerful exchange—a connection built over years and strengthened by mutual trust.
The lighting, soft and soothing, guided the dancers into a hypnotic state, encouraging them to follow the rhythm without resistance. This immersion was a form of transcendental meditation, a journey into what might be called the sacred. It was spiritual, undeniably so—a unity forged in the spirit of underground life, epitomized by the living legend that is Danny Tenaglia.
THE MAGIC OF ABANDONMENT
Beyond the music, beyond the lights, beyond the walls, it’s the collective state of mind—the presence of the people—that allows such moments to exist.
Have you heard The Magic Room by Dino Lenny and Seth Troxler? (If not, listen here: The Magic Room.) It’s about this.
It’s in these moments of total surrender—when time dissolves and anticipation ceases—that the most magical experiences unfold.
When events have a predictable end, the mind clings to that framework, tethering us to the next plan. But when we abandon ourselves to the moment without seeking an end or worrying about it, we unlock a sacred liberation.
DANSE-EN-TRANSE-EN-DANSE-EN-TRANSCENDANCE VERS LE SACRÉ
I couldn’t exactly pinpoint which spectrum of the night this segment was in, but somewhere in the last two hours I think, maybe around 8.30pm when there were still between 80 and 100 dancers on the floor, I observed with my eyes a moment when everyone was in motion, and except for two people at the front for just a few seconds, Ab-so-lu-ment-per-so-n-ne-par-lait (yes yes, read in cadence).
I took the time to observe, wanting to be sure of what I was seeing:
Every single individual present on the entire square of the dance floor was in motion, swaying, moving and dancing, for themselves, or with others. There was no agglomeration, no gathering, no one leaning over each other to exchange…
Everyone present was dancing, bathed in a soft, dark blue light in the background, with bluish nuggets like little pieces of paper floating on the water and moving gently across the floor, illuminated simply by the pure crystal sparkles of the great ball, which flooded everyone with its rays like a divine star…
Each person had at last found their innermost self, and was experiencing a moment of great intimacy, alone with the Dj.
Rarely had I seen such beautiful, peaceful smiles, such gentle movement and a symphony of bodies on such a beautiful energetic score. Even the people sitting on the big block against the little staircase wall, as well as the people sitting on the speakers in the corners, weren’t talking, they were contemplating the stage, the dancers, the light…
And it certainly lasted more than two, maybe five minutes. Which is still a long time when you spread it out over a crowd of 80 or 100 participants. Not a word from anyone in the entire square.
And I didn’t dream this moment, I can confirm it, I observed each dancer with my open, clear-sighted eyes, and I took the time to look properly: no one spoke.
It’s exceptional to have been able, for at least a few moments, to extract 100% of each spirit from the bodies present, to draw them into a place where, surely, angels dance with souls.

My joy is to have been able to witness this in full consciousness while I myself was dancing with the angels. At that precise moment, nothing other than the music existed anywhere else in each of us, no external distractions, no words, no interference interrupting the sacred relationship between the Dancers and the DJ. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a beautiful moment of absolute peace and total aggregation of consciousness.
It’s one of the most Sacred moments I’ve ever seen at the Stereo in terms of absolute communion with (((the egregore)))) of the dance beyond the ceremonial times of our elders.
Though perhaps very brief, and lasting only the time of an instant, it is nevertheless the kind of moment that becomes eternal, if only for having existed.
For a long time to come, I’ll remember this very present moment, shared with you in the unconscious.

IN THE END TOWARDS THE ETERNAL

A GRATITUDE FOR THE PRIVILEGE
This shared experience—a community gathered beneath the great disco ball—is a privilege. It’s worth pausing to acknowledge this:
We are fortunate to live in a time and space where such moments are possible. Billions of humans throughout history and across the globe have lived and died without ever feeling such profound emotions, such safety, or such proximity to others.
It’s a gift.
Take a moment to reflect on this and give thanks—for the music, the people, the environment, and the life you’ve been given. Dance has likely brought more magic into your life than you realize.

This, my friends, is what I like to call it: (((S.O.U.L))) (Spirit of Underground Living).
CONCLUSION
Paul, I danced for you, and in doing so, I felt the profound connection that music brings. Danny’s set wasn’t just a performance; it was a gift, a ritual, and an invitation to experience something eternal.
I hope this letter brings you closer to the experience and that, in reading it, you feel the echoes of that unforgettable night.
ACKNOWLEDGING THE VISIONARIES
In my name, and perhaps in yours too, I extend my deepest gratitude to DJ Danny Tenaglia for his exceptional performance. Thank you to Stereo and its staff & direction for making this possible.

Sixteen hours of bar service, security, cleaning, lighting effects, managing entrances, cloakrooms—it’s an enormous effort. The organization, the dedication, and the sheer will of everyone involved is what allows us to experience something so extraordinary.
To all of them: thank you.
WE ARE ONE
In the end, this is what we become: one.
I am you, you are me, and together, we are all.
We are Stereo, Stereo, Stereo.
